Antivirus Firewall Software

I have heard that sometimes, free anti-virus software is better than paid for stuff. So i was wondering, which is the best free one so that I can compare it to the one I currently have and see if I would be better off getting a free anti-virus or firewall software.

can anyone advise me of anyfree antivirus or firewall software, as my computer only has 196mb of mem i cant download bt’s software as it requires 256mb!

I never said I had a problem with it, I just wanted to know if it’s safe.

I am reformatting my system and want a new A/V firewall than what i had last. My previous one was Live OneCare, and before that i had Bitdefender 9. Help anybody?

As you can probably tell I am a Windows user but Ive seen how good Ubuntu is and I decided to give it a go on a spare PC of mine.

Ive got it all installed,which used up some of the old grey matter.

I am however most impressed, especially seeing as its free.

Now to get back to my question.

I have heard you dont need antivirus software, firewall etc. with Linux. Is this true ?

If I do need to install some kind of security, could someone be so kind to point me in the right direction.
